Sew: Grainline Moss Mini Skirt

 

 

 

This skirt has been in production for well over 3 weeks. It doesn't normally take that long but it got pushed aside by the Drape Jacket and life in general. Despite my extreme exhaustion due to the week's events, I was determined to finish it last night so I could get my sewjo happening again. It only took an hour to finish up and I'm super pleased with the end result. I feel another Moss Mini Skirt coming along soon. Possibly in a polka dot denim. And a winter version would be good for layering with tights and boots.

Alerations: Lengthened by 20cm, 5cm hem, graded in sideseam from hip to waist by 1cm.

I wore this skirt to the markets this morning with my floral tiny pocket tank. I can see this skirt getting a lot of wear!

Sew: Grainline Moss Mini Skirt

 

I've been thinking about this pattern for some time but once I saw Boo Dogg's and Poppykettle's versions, it jumped to the top of the list! I was too impatient to wait for my beautiful Italian denim from Tessuti to be pre-washed and dried that I went stash shopping and found this navy cotton drill from Spotlight. I bought 5 metres to make my Clover toiles but only used 1.5 metres after finding out the hard way that it does not contain 3% stretch. 

 

I made View B with the hem band. I simply hemmed the hem band with a 1.5cm hem instead of following the directions which direct you to fold the hem band in half and slip stitch it to the seam. I used some Liberty fabric left over from my Lonsdale dress for the pockets and facings.

I opted for a hook and slide instead of the jean button for a clean look. I will attempt the button for my next version.

I forgot to remove the basting stitches from the zip...

I am ridiculously pleased with this skirt. I'm not in love with the fabric (cheap cotton drill) but can see so much potential in this pattern. The Italian denim is cut and waiting, including more Liberty lining. I just need to hem some neon green monkey boxer shorts for the boys...

Sew: Floral Grainline Tiny Pocket Tank

 

I love this fabric. I loved it from the moment I set eyes on it in Tessuti. I made a beautiful dress out of it but it was short lived as it quickly became too big. The dress has sat in my sewing room scrunched up for well over a year waiting for a new lease of life. Thankfully the Tiny Pocket Tank came to the rescue!!

 

 

 

I simply cut the tank out of the skirt, placing the darts at the shoulder. I used purchased bias tape for the armholes and neckline.

 

I wore it yesterday with an unblogged Simplicity 2215 denim skirt. It was a bit of a colour explosion with a pink cardigan!!

Sew: Liberty Scout Woven Tee

 

 

It is safe to say that I love the Scout Woven Tee pattern. It is just so comfortable yet stylish making it a very valuable addition to my "Mum" wardrobe. I also think it is great to showcase beautiful cotton fabric in the same way that the Tiny Pocket Tank does.

Sew: Grainline Scout Tee in Marc Jacobs

I'm back!! We just returned from an epic holiday touring Canberra, Sydney, the Blue Mountains & Jervis Bay. We had an awesome time. More on that later...

I made a few items in the week before we left and got my handy photographer (aka husband) to snap some photos while we were holidaying.

First up is a Grainline Scout Woven Tee in a lovely Marc Jacobs cotton that I picked up at The Fabric Store at our last sewists meet up. I really love this pattern, it is super easy and versatile. Perfect on summer days by itself or layered with a cardigan for cooler weather.

Sew: Scout Woven Tee

 

 

A quick and easy sew. Perfect for breaking up the monotony of sewing lined shift dresses for work and cutting out heaps of items including the Lily Linen Dress. That thing takes forever to piece together!

Fabric: Japanese Cotton (very drapey) purchased in Tokyo last year

Alterations: None. Cut a size L.

My only suggestion for this tee is to select a fabric with a good drape. There are no darts in the front panel so a fabric with good drape is required so it doesn't stick out too much. I would love a Liberty one. Perfect for layering on my "Mummy" days.

This fabric was a holiday purchase on our trip to Japan last year. I was lucky enough to score a day in the fabric district, Nippori, and I bought as much as I could fit into my backpack which was not nearly enough. I considered sacrificing nappies and formula for more fabric but came to my senses! Thankfully as that stuff is hard to find in Japan. I would love to go back to Japan one day. It was an amazing holiday, perfect for children and full of amazing fabric & notions. In the meantime, I will wear items sewn from my holiday fabrics to remind me of my travels. And plan the next holiday!

To Market We Go

Our regular Sunday morning outing is a trip to the Queen Victoria Markets to do the weekly shop. After the shopping we have a coffee and some jam donuts and watch the kids climb over the statues... I love the markets!

My market top on this hot and blustery day is the freshly made Grainline Studio Tiny Pocket Tank (sans tiny pocket). This is a great simple pattern which took about 2 hours to make from cutting out the pattern to hemming (all whilst watching Playschool and Thomas!). It is a bit low in the neckline so I will raise this about an inch in my next version. I made the newly available size 18 but took the side seams in an extra 1cm. I could probably go down a size but I like it loose and cool.

On my sewing machine now is the Colette Patterns Ginger Skirt in a navy drill. I am also working on my Autumn/Winter Wardrobe plans, but it is a bit difficult in this heat.
