I'm surprised there are not more Hedy dresses on the interwebs. It's such a great pattern for a dress that's a bit different. I couldn't work out in my head if it was going to work in a stripe so I decided to just go for it. It is only fabric. And I'm so pleased with how it worked out! There was no stripe matching at all for the top. The only thing I tried to match was the side seams in the skirt section.

I opted for the neckline facing and have only tacked it down at the seams. I may go back and topstitch it down all the way around at 1 cm. I'll see how much it annoys me. I chose not to include the pockets as I didn't want any extra bulk in that area.
There will be another of these. I'd like a plain colour one. Probably black or charcoal. Of course.
Amazing what you find in your blog draft posts! I made this dress long ago and I'm very pleased with it. The fabric may be a little lightweight for this pattern but it seems to be surviving.

This is my fourth Moneta dress. I have my beloved Jaywalk striped version, a red one that was gifted to my mum, a plain black one and this floral one. I find them the perfect work dress paired with some heals and a blazer in Winter.

Probably not the most flattering of dresses but I'm not fussed. Today is going to be a scorcher here in Melbourne and I'm also flying to Brisbane which is a whole different kind of hot. My temporary childless days are over, as I'm going to get the boys from "Club Grandparents" and to see my family (very briefly).

This red linen sway dress was conceived after the success of my (yet to be blogged) Frocktails dress. Although, it's not as successful. I'm not sure what happened but the neckline has warped, possibly due to stretching. I failed to stay stitch or stay tape the neckline as I didn't need to with the first. I also have trouble keeping the straps on my shoulders so I have safety pins in there. So a bit of a doozy but you can't win all the time.

This was my Christmas day dress. It was great for sitting on the floor unwrapping presents, eating copious amounts of ham and just general lounging around. And it went perfectly with my Christmas light earrings.

I took my polka dot Frankie dress for a spin today. We went in to the city to see the Christmas sights. Mr "almost 8" took a shot so I could blog it for you all to see.

I found this fabric in the depths of Clear It on a recent trip with my MIL. I was in the "not buying anything" category until I spotted this for some ridiculously cheap price. There is always room in my stash for spots (and stripes!).

The pattern is of course the Tessuti Frankie dress. I put the pattern centre front 1cm from the fabric fold, adding a total of 2cm to both the front and back width. I think this works well, but next time I will try just adding 1cm to the width as well as lengthening the should seam (as mentioned in my last post). Now to find more printed fabric to make more Frankies!

Another day, another Frankie dress. This is my fifth attempt at this dress. I just can't give up on it. The first was in a ponte and wasn't stretchy enough so was gifted to a friend. The second was in a pink jersey and it was unwearable as you could see every lump and bump so that one was gifted to Savers. The third was a winner and was my black midi version. The fourth is a spotty version that is finished but yet to be worn. And this here is my fifth that I wore this afternoon for our street's Christmas party.

This version is a summer dress. Short sleeves with the short dress length. I added some width to the sleeve and will add more again next time. I'd like the short sleeves not to be fitted. I only added an inch to this due to fabric restrictions. I bought 2m and the pattern says 1.85m. I will buy more next time so I can add another 2cm or so. I also added 1cm to the centre front by laying the pattern piece 0.5cm from the fold. I find the pattern narrow across the shoulders and chest. My navy spot version has 2cm added so we'll see which I prefer once I wear that one.
I haven't finished with the Frankie dress pattern yet. I'm determined to make it work. I really like the neckline. I like that it's high and provides sun coverage. I've just discovered Sewing with Kate's shoulder adjustment to add width to the shoulder seam. I'll be giving that a go next time.
I sense a pattern emerging here. Late to join the party/bandwagon yet again...

This is of course the Tessuti Gabby dress pattern that was released many years ago and has been made by countless sewers around the world. It's a great pattern that is simple and stylish and a great way to use a feature fabric.

The fabric was purchased from Tessuti Fabrics in Melbourne over a year ago. I was hoping for a bit of Gorman style with this make. Not sure I pulled it off but I'm pretty happy with this dress. It will get a lot of wear when the Melbourne weather finally warms up.
Another pattern that I'm late to the party with. Never mind. This is the Sewaholic Hollyburn skirt which is a lovely pattern that is well drafted. I've made it in a stretch wool suiting but I'm dying to make it in a wool crepe with a lovely drape. It would also be fabulous in a linen for summer. The possibilities are endless!

As always, I'm late to the party with this pattern. I like to see how everyone else goes before I attempt a pattern!

The pattern is of course the Cashmerette Appleton wrap dress. I do love a good wrap dress but the last one I made slips off my shoulders so I get sore shoulders when I wear it. The Appleton stays exactly where it is supposed to. The wrap provides good coverage up top and I won't need to wear a slip underneath (when the weather finally warms up!). I find the top layer of skirt drops down when I wear it. This is fixed if I tie it up under my breast but the wrap wants to tie around my waist where I prefer it to tie. I will need to look in to this more before I make my next version. I'm planning a plain black one next.

The fabric is a viscose knit that I picked up at the House of Cloth a few weeks ago when I went to Bendigo with some fellow sewing ladies. It was hanging in the window and I couldn't walk past. I love the colour. The fabric is pilling slightly where it rubs against something, like my work lanyard or under my arms. We'll see how it goes. The only other issue with the fabric is that the tie is a little to heavy for the fabric and I can't pull it too tightly around me. I'll use a thicker knit with more stretch next time.

My beloved original Simplicity 2343 skirt was worn to death (probably beyond) and was finally thrown out earlier this year. This left a hole in my heart, and work wardrobe, that was in need of fixing straight away. Luckily I had started this skirt 12 months earlier and it was sitting in the naughty corner (aka UFO pile) as the waistband was too big. A quick unpick and a few stitches later I had myself a worthy replacement!

This is the best pencil skirt pattern I am yet to come by. And I own plenty of patterns! The waistband is curved which makes it sit perfectly. And the standard skirt darts are replaced by triangles on the sides that add shape. I chose to line my skirt by copying the general shape of the skirt, adding a centimetre to each side seam and pleating it to fit the waistband.

Tessuti have done it again! They've created a simple yet stylish classic pattern. So many possibilities!

Frankie and I got off to a bit of a rough start. My first version was in a stable ponte and the arms and upper chest were way too tight. The second was a muslin that I intend to wear as a nightie. Unfortunately, my test version was in a very stretchy jersey so I didn't pick up on the continuing fit issues. This version is made in a black viscose jersey from Tessuti that I've used before many times. This time I ordered 5 metres to keep me going for a while! It is completely wearable (and I will wear it often) but there are a few issues that I'll fix for the next version.

The first main issue is that the arms are too tight. I will slash and spread the pattern piece, like I do the Mandy boat tee, and add about 2cm at the hem. I think this will fix a lot of the problem but I also think the shoulders and neckline aren't wide enough on me. I think I will try adding a centimetre or two to the centre front. I just want it to sit wider across the top. Not very technical but I think it will work.

Otherwise, it's a really great pattern. I omitted the elastic in neckline and it seems to be fine. The played around with the length of the sleeve and skirt. The sleeves were hemmed at just above elbow length and the skirt is half way between the two skirt pattern lengths. A good midi length.

I finally jumped on the Vogue 1247 bandwagon. I like to make sure that it is thoroughly tested before I decide to join in! I made the skirt without all the bells and whistles (no pockets or binding). I also graded out from the hips down by 1cm each side and added 6cm length for a decent hem.

The fabric is a printed denim I found on the Tessuti remnant table when I popped in for some samples. It's nice and study and I love the print. Can't have enough animal print!

There's not much else to say about this skirt. It will fit in perfectly with my wardrobe of black and grey!

I love the look of my first grey Sydney jacket but the wool is not soft and not comfortable to wear. When I made my second Sydney jacket this year, I loved the softness of the boiled wool so much that I couldn't bring myself to wear the first grey one anymore. I always opted for the softer "grilled eggplant" one. So I decided to buy some grey boiled wool to make a jacket to replace my original Sydney jacket. And geez I love it so!

My father calls it my blanket jacket and it secretly is a blanket I suppose. But a stylish blanket!

The wool is a boiled wool from The Drapery online. I bought the one that had a machine fault every 30cm (now sold out). It is lovely and soft and the perfect grey colour.

I did extend the sleeves this time by 10cm but I'm not convinced about them. They seem to catch on my elbows when I bend my arms. I may go back and chop them off. At least it's easy with this pattern!

After the raging success of my first Sydney Jacket, I went on the hunt for a camel coloured boiled wool to make another. I thought camel would go well with black. Not sure what happened but I came out of Rathdowne Fabrics with this maroon slightly brown coloured boiled wool. At Sewjourn, we decided to call it "Grilled Eggplant".

Whatever colour it is, I've certainly enjoyed wearing it. My first Sydney jacket was in a felted wool and although I love the colour, it is not very snuggly to wear. After wearing this boiled wool version a few times, I went and bought a grey boiled wool to replace my first version. It is like wearing a blanket. So warm and snuggly.
I bought this fabric a good 3 or 4 years ago on a trip to Sydney with Rachel. I knew it was going to be a knit tee dress. It just had to wait for a few years to become a reality.

I like the fit of the Lola tee through the body but the shoulders are a bit off on me. I like the shoulders of the Alexa tee but the body is a bit too fitted for me. Combine the two and voila!! The shoulders, sleeves and chest area are the Alexa tee. From the bust down is the Alexa tee lengthened to dress length. I wasn't planning on matching the stripes but they were too close not to match.
This dress is summer perfection to me. Black & white, tent-like and a TNT pattern. It is of course the Lily Linen Dress pattern from Tessuti Fabrics. I've made it twice before and both have become firm favourites. I really like the fit of the pattern across the neck and chest on me. It fits well and falls perfectly.

This time I used a rayon nylon blend from Tessuti that is light and drapey. It has a slight crinkle to it which is good because it doesn't press well.

The only alteration I made was to omit the hemline tucks.
I also used the Lily Linen Dress pattern to make a dress for a good friend's significant birthday. I asked her to chose her fabric from Tessuti and she chose a medium-weight linen called Licorice which is an interesting greyish green (the colour you get when you bite in to licorice).
Another Inari Dress! I was on a roll so I just went with it and kept making Inari dresses. My first one was very dressy so I went the casual route for this one. The third is somewhere in between.

I lengthened this dress by 12cm after the indecency of the last version. It's a perfect day length at the front but the back looks a bit long. It doesn't bother me though. The fabric is from Spotlight last year when they got a big shipment of printed chambrays. It's more of a denim than chambray in weight.

I used the facings for this version (my last one was lined) and although I'm not usually a fan of facings these stay nice and flat during wear. They don't look like they will when on a hanger but they do once on the body. I didn't top stitch the facing down. Just stitched in the ditch of the shoulder seams.
My photographer is a 5 year old with a broken hand today so these photos required serious cropping to get the dress in the frame... It's my last day at home with Mr 5 today. He's had Wednesdays off for the month of February. Next week he's going to school for all 5 days! And I get to stay home on Fridays and sew!!!!! Can you tell I'm a little bit excited?!

I didn't specifically sew this dress for Frocktails. I had worn it twice but never blogged it. So I'm calling it my Frocktails dress!

The fabric was a 1.2m remnant found in the depths of my fabric stash. I'd made a dress for my cousin's wedding many years ago and as it was so wide, found myself with a decent remnant at the end. And so it sat in the stash, getting deeper and deeper until I was rummaging one day. I struck gold!

The pattern is of the course Named Clothing Inari Tee Dress which has been made time and again across the internet. I decided to line my dress and omitted the facings. The only other change was to lengthen it by 7cm. When standing the dress is a good length but when sitting it is almost indecent. So it is a dress for standing parties! Subsequent versions have been lengthen 12cm which works well.

Frocktails was a fabulous night. I had a great time with friends and loved meeting new people. There were many people there that I didn't get around to chatting to. Next time!
Is there a period of time after which you cannot post an item on your blog?? I believe I made this dress at the end of last Summer and then put it away, so it's about 11 months old. Better late than never!

This is of course the Tessuti Alice dress. I'm not sure I can add much value to the discussion on this pattern. It's simple, easy to put together and perfect for hot weather. Just make sure you go down two sizes. I'm still not sold on this style on me. It does look a bit shapeless on me but some days just call for a glorified sack.

I do love this linen. I had a tiny piece of the orange colourway a few years ago. I couldn't justify the expense of it for a full garment. Then one fateful day, I saw it online reduced or as a remnant, I can't remember which, and I snatched it up. I have a little bit left which I'm hoping to get a top out of. Thankfully, fabric doesn't go off.

My cousin got married last weekend on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula. I picked up this amazing Max Mara cotton sateen from Tessuti Melbourne way back in October with good intentions to get cracking on this outfit. I knew I wanted to make a two piece outfit with a full A-line skirt and a cropped tank top. And that's as far as I got...

I finally bought the patterns on New Year's Eve. I also got the netting to underline the skirt. My plan was to crank it out while the boys were on holidays with my parents (hello, camping at the beach!). Instead I went out a few nights with my husband, as you do when you don't have the kids. I also spent a few nights stuck on the couch with Netflix, just because. I then got sick with some nasty virus which rendered me bed-ridden for a few days. And then the boys were back!

Once I did start, I encountered numerous problems with the skirt. I'd folded a good 20cm of width out of the skirt flare and didn't re-do the curve of the waistband. Rookie mistake. So when it came to attaching the waistband to the skirt, there were massive folds of fabric at the hip near the waistband. The fabric wanted to bunch up. I knew something was off in this area as the angle at the side seam - waistline corner was too sharp. So I unpicked the waistband, side seam invisible zip and re-drew the waistline curve. Removing 5cm off the top of the waist at the side seam and tapering it back to the existing centre front. I then re-inserted the zip and re-attached the waistband. Outfit saved!

I finished the outfit at 11am on the day of the wedding. We dropped the boys with friends at midday and drove to Geelong for the wedding. Close call! I'm pleased to report I wasn't hand stitching in the car on the way. My grandmother was famous for doing that!

The top was no trouble at all. I made quite a few alterations (see below) and hemmed it temporarily so I can unpick it to return it to a more everyday length.

I most likely won't wear this outfit again as a complete set but I really want to wear the individual pieces frequently. I've already worn the skirt to work this week, paired with a white t-shirt and black flats.

Happy new year friends! I'm really looking forward to 2016 and what it holds. I love turning over a new leaf.

I know it's been months since I last posted but I'm back with a new work skirt. Yes, another Simplicity 2215. Why change when you're a winner?

I used a crepe from Tessuti Melbourne instead of a cotton sateen this time. Complete game changer! The different fabric changes the whole look of the skirt. This fabric is soft and swishy but with a bit of weight.

I made this skirt exactly the same size as all the other versions and it turned out about 7cm too big on the waist. No I have definitely not lost weight (quite the opposite actually) and I'd only just made another version a few weeks earlier. I can only attribute this to the fabric, even though it has no stretch. All my other versions have been cotton sateen. This is a much lighter crepe. Once I'd completely finished it, I realised it was too big and that I wouldn't wear it as is. Rachel suggested I insert some elastic in to the back waist band to bring it in. It worked a treat and actually makes for a very comfortable skirt.

As always, there will be more of these skirts. They are a perfect work skirt for me.

For a long time I wasn't sure what I was going to make for Frocktails. But thanks to the powers of Instagram I was obsessed with Vogue 8921 after I saw Kat's post. Kat was extremely kind to gift me her pattern as she'd bought a size too large. Thanks Kat!

The fabric I chose was a glittery mesh fabric from Rathdowne Fabrics. I bought it with no plans. I just I thought it would be a fun stash fabric. It didn't even make it to the stash. Thankfully, as I don't have any room in the stash at the moment!

The pattern is good and I would like to make it again in a slinkier knit. I'd also like to make it with the crossover front. It was fun to wear but it's not really my style. I don't usually wear long sleeves. Or glittery knits.

The biggest issue I had was the shapelessness of the waist. I wasn't planning on wearing it with a belt but it didn't really look any good without some sort of waist definition. I tried sewing elastic in to the waist without success. A belt was the easiest solution.

All in all it was a fun project for an excellent night. Not sure it will be worn again as is. I might shorten it to just below the knee and possibly shorten the sleeves to 3/4.

I am currently wearing this skirt. I thought if I don't blog it now, like right now, it will never make it to the blog.

My love for Simplicity 2215 is well documented. You can see my previous makes here and here. I also have an undocumented denim one. I made this skirt as per the pattern and just lengthened it by 7.5cm.

The sateen is really nice and crisp. It holds its shape and doesn't wrinkle much at all. The squares are actually blue and black which is a slight change from my standard black, charcoal and white work wardrobe. I would like to make a blue top to wear with this skirt. I'm wearing it with my black Mandy boat tee.
I'm back with another project that has sat 95% done for a few months, waiting for me to hem it. I accidentally scorched the fabric on the back while doing the neckline so it was sent to the naughty corner for a while.

I made the same neckline alteration to this top as my stripey version. I lengthened the body by 10cm and left the sleeves as per the pattern. I prefer the sleeves slightly shorter like the stripe top so will shorten the sleeves in future makes. They sit right at the elbow which is a bit awkward.

This top has been a long time coming but I finally got my act together and hemmed it on Saturday afternoon. About 5 minutes after we were due to leave for a birthday party...

I made my first Simplicity 1366 a few months ago in a floral sateen and it has terrible neck gape issues. I ended up putting a pleat in the back neckline but it's not ideal and I don't wear it. This neck gape issue is not a new problem for me but I'm a slow learner. Solving this problem on this style of top was a bit tricky as I had no bust dart to slash and spread to allow me to fold out the excess from the neckline. I played around with the paper pattern and ended up folding out 3cm from the neckline (both front and back) by running the fold all the way from the neckline to the corner of the side seam and hem. This worked a treat!

The fabric is a thick knit from Gardams in Brisbane that I bought at Christmas. It was bought for a skirt but the recovery is not good so it was re-directed to a top. The neckline binding is a strip of white jersey from the stash.
