Sew: New Look 6000 in Metallic Snake Print

Metallic snake print fabric? Yes, please!! Well that's what I said in Clegs one day when I went to buy a zip. The student in front of me was getting samples of a range of fabrics and one of them was a metallic gold and black snake print jacquard. When it was my turn, I bought my zip.... and 1.5m of this fabulous fabric.

I knew that I would make this pattern again. My first two dresses are in high rotation for my work wardrobe. The are comfortable and stylish. I made this version exactly the same as the others, including the swayback adjustment and grading the size 16 out to a size 18 at the waist and hips. I probably should have gone a smidge larger as this fabric has no give whatsoever and is a little tight. Lucky I've been allowed to start running again!

I love the pleated sleeves.

The fabric had a stripe in the print, so I carefully matched the stripe across the zip and at the side seam. The dress is lined with black goldliner lining.

Project Details
Pattern: New Look 6000, view A, size 16-18
Fabric: Snake print metallic jacquard and black goldliner from Clegs
Alterations: Size 16 at bust & shoulders graded to a size 18 at waist & hips, 4cm sway back adjustment, 3cm total removed from centre back neckline, lengthened 10cm (4cm hem)

I'm pretty happy with my new dress. I just love this style dress for work. I might have to make a few more!!

Sew: New Look 6000

Not much to report about this dress. Except for the fact that black is really, really hard to photograph yourself...

I used the same black ponti knit from Rathdowne Fabrics as my Simplicity 2250 jacket and Vogue 8787 dress. I bought 4 metres for the two original projects but managed to squeeze an extra dress out of it as well.

Due to my fabric restriction, I used New Look 6000 without the pleats and opted for half length sleeves. I was going for a casual "t-shirt" shift dress, like the ponti knit dresses in Country Road, so chose a casual sleeve length and top stitched the hem and sleeves using a wide twin needle. I also lined the body of the dress for comfort and style.

Pattern: New Look 6000
Fabric: Black ponti knit from Rathdowne Fabrics
Alterations: 4cm total sway back adjustment, graded pattern up to size 18, lengthened by 10cm, added lining (used smaller seams on lining fabric)

This is my second time using New Look 6000. It is a great basic pattern that I am sure I will use many more times. I do, however, need to move on from ponti knit for the time being. I have made 4 garments from ponti in the last 2 months and I have one more sitting on my sewing table...

Sew: New Look 6000

Remember my WIP? Well, it is finally complete and I am in LOVE!

New Look 6000 has been around for a while. There are many versions on the web, mostly with the pleats, collar and cuffs. I was originally planning a blue ponte 3/4 sleeve version but thought I'd better test the pattern out first due to a sway back and the fact I've never made a shift dress before. This fabric was another impulse buy from Spotlight while I was waiting in line. While I was testing things out with the pattern, I spied the cute pleated sleeves and thought I'd give them a go too. This all resulted in a fabulous dress!

I think this is my favourite work dress to date. That is a HUGE call! I have a lot of dresses. But, how cool is this dress?! I am loving the short pleated sleeves and think they will be perfect for work in both winter and summer.
Project Details
Pattern: New Look 6000 View A (without the flower)
Fabric: Printed stretch cotton sateen from Spotlight plus black lining from Tessuti
Alterations:
  • Graded pattern up to a size 18 by adding 1.5cm to the side seams only (pattern only goes to a size 16)
  • Used 3cm seam at armhole grading to 1.5cm seam from waist down
  • Cut the lining using dress pattern and used a 6mm seam for lining fabric to allow for ease of movement
  • Sway back adjustment - removed 2cm from centre (will do 4cm next time) and straightened the grainline by removing excess fabric from centre back from adjustment up to back neckline
  • Added 10cm to length.
The pattern does not call for lining but I knew it would wear better, especially with stockings, if it was fully lined. I simply cut the dress from the fabric and the lining fabric but used a smaller seam allowance for the lining (sideseams and centreback).

I wore this dress all day at work and it was a delight to wear. Super comfortable and stylish. Perfect!

So, what do you think? Have you made New Look 6000 before?
