Sew: Colette Hazel Dress FAIL

The dreaded hanger shot. The Colette Hazel Dress and I are not friends. I shouldn't be too harsh as I think it is mainly due to the fabric and not the pattern. The fabric is quite a stiff poplin that I bought in Japan last year. It is not nice fabric and I've become accustomed to nice fabric. The fit issues are mainly with the bodice darts but I don't love it enough to unpick it and attempt to fix it.

You win some, you lose some.

I'm willing to try again in a nicer, softer fabric. I even bought some Japanese cotton voile yesterday when I popped in to Rathdowne Fabrics for notion supplies. We will see how that goes.

Have you tried the Colette Hazel dress? What's your opinion?

  1. What a shame, the print on the fabric is great though :(

  2. I haven't made the hazel, even though I've been eyeing it with lascivious intent - but I have made the peony & I had fitting nightmares with the darts on that. It wasn't pleasant, but it was worth persevering with because it's now my favourite dress bodice. I'm totally loving the border print you've got on the skirt though! That's gorgeous :)

  3. I haven't tried the Hazel dress - I just don't think that it would work on my shape. I think that your dress needs to become a skirt - because that print looks fantastic!

  4. I agree - make it a skirt as the fabric is amazing.

  5. Oh no! The print is so attractive, sorry to hear it was a poor quality and didn't translate well to a dress. I haven't made any of the Colette patterns because I think they are designed for a more curvy shape than mine :-(. I'll get to one eventually but I know I'll have to make lots of adjustments!

  6. It's a stunning print! Don't throw it away, make something else with it!

  7. I agree with the others, make a skirt with that fabric!

  8. I found when I made Hazel that I needed to take quite a lot out of the back to back the front bodice fit better. Peony also has a big back so I think it's a Colette pattern thing.
You MUST save this dress - that fabric is amazing!

  9. I haven't tried any of the Colette patterns yet but it seems that people generally need to alter them quite a bit. The fabric you've used on the skirt portion looks great and I'm with everyone else - I hope you make it into a skirt.

  10. I love that print!!! Definitely make it a skirt!!

I had some tweaks to make on Hazel but not nearly as many as I have with Colette patterns that have an upper back. I get major back neck gape with them so at least there wasn't that aspect involved lol

I did have to do an fba, adjust the strap position, and some other minor changes for personal taste - not too bad all in all :)

  11. That pattern is in my queue, but I really like the print you selected...it's a shame that it didn't work out for you.

  12. OMG that fabric is awesome! Hazel can be a bit persnickety with fitting issues. I have noticed a number of sewists have trouble with this one. Good luck on your next attempt :)

  13. I definitely had to change the dart placement for my Hazel dresses but that seemed to help a lot.

I hope you do give it another go. It's a great dress. I love the fabric you used. I hope you can save it somehow.

  15. Omg that fabric would've been perfect for a throw on redingote.. Sorry to hear things didn't work out.. perhaps you can rescue the bottom half for a skirt?
