Sew: Simplicity 2250 Jacket

Hello, my name is Leith and I have cardigan obsessive disorder... I wear cardigans all the time. I even wear them to bed. Cardigan was in Mr N's first 50 words. I love cardigans!

I am attempting to revamp my work wardrobe. Moving away from cardigans with everything and more into short cropped jackets with shift dresses. I was having coffee with Rachel one day when she told me she bought some black ponti knit for a jacket, Simplicity 2250. Light bulb moment! I instantly thought of binding the seams and cuffs with polkadots.

Project Details
Pattern: Simplicity 2250, Jacket
Fabric: Black Lightweight Ponti Knit from Rathdowne Fabrics
Notions: 1cm thick shoulder pads, bias binding
Alterations: Cut size 20, took extra 1cm off seams (next time size 18), shaped side seams in at waist by another 1cm.

I'm pretty pleased with this make. It will get good wear at work. I'd like to make this again in a lightweight denim for a casual jacket to wear with summer dresses. What do you think?

Does anyone know of a short casual blazer pattern? Preferably lined and approximately hip length?

On another note, I am super excited about tomorrow's Sewist's Meet Up!! Can't wait to meet you all. The only problem is, what to wear?!

  1. Awesomeness. I too am an unabashed cardigan lover. Unlike the obvious defector you are though, I hadn't yet thought to alter my habit :) But I think you and Rachel are onto something with the whole unstructured 'jacket' concept. They sound seriously comfy! I may have to ponder this some more. Whilst I'm figuring out what to wear tomorrow. See you then!

    2. Sorry, that probably came across a wee bit more acidic than I intended! My sense of humour is brutal. I do love your jacket :)

  3. It was a great idea to make the jacket in a ponti knit - it must be super comfortable and I love the polka dot binding.

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering what to wear tomorrow :)

  4. Love it Leith! I'm so excited to see your version of this jacket pattern. I have the pattern too and always loved this collarless style, thought it was a great alternative to the many cardigans I wear but have wanted a jacket to make.

I have the calico all sorted was just waiting to find a suitable fabric for it, never thought of making it in the Ponti Knit! Will make mine up in that too. Thank you thank you for the inspiration.

Wished I was in Melbourne this weekend to see everyone at the meet.

Pity we won't see you this weekend. We'll have to come to Sydney!

  7. Great jacket, I especially love the trim. I have just made a pair of pants from black ponti and had to alter them down a size - despite careful measuring and a partial toile! Maybe the way the ponti acts? Not particularly fussed though, I'll take a size smaller any day! The pants are now favourites though.

  9. Oooh, excellent idea. I too live in cardigans (mostly as a wearable comfort blanket) and I think a navy version would be awesome.

  10. Great jacket. Love the dotty details. I love cardigans too. They're just so simple and easy to wear. Moving to jackets is definitely stepping it up a notch. Hope you all have fun at the meet-up!

  11. I am a cardi addict as well. I have to say, it is better than being a hoody addict in my opinion. I love your new jacket though. I hadn't thought of making a jacket in ponti. If you are looking for a good casual blazer pattern try New Look 6035. It isn't lined but I found it really easy to adapt. You can see mine at http://fabricepiphanies.blogspot.co.nz/2012/08/jade-jacket.html
