Sew: New York Cape

Meet my New York Cape! Isn't she beautiful? My lovely parents gave me the pattern as a Christmas present and I had been keeping my eye out for the perfect check wool coating. Finally I found the perfect fabric, a Marc Jacobs wool coating from the The Fabric Store, and I was on my merry way.

Cutting the fabric out took some time and mental strength, not to mention a stiff drink! It took me hours to get my head around matching the checks both vertically and horizontally. It's not perfect but I am very pleased with it. I used some handy tips from Pattern Scissors Cloth for working with checks and plaids.

All up, this project was a really enjoyable sew. I really like the finish that the binding gives and I love my new cape. Perfect for a girls night out at The Brunswick Green with my mothers group friends.

  1. It's lovely! That fabric is something else, and very well-suited to the pattern.

Your pictures have inspired me to get my almost-finished NY cape from the wardrobe and push ahead. That involves learning how to make buttonholes with my "new" machine - that I bought 2 years ago and still haven't properly mastered yet. Sewing mojo, where are you?

  2. This is great - I love the fabric and it looks like you've matched the fabric perfectly! I also recently purchased the NY cape pattern but am still searching for the right fabric. I've been to three shops already and think Tessuti and The Fabric Store might be next. Lovely work.

  5. It looks fabulous! Great job!! And the pattern matching on the plaid is great. Actually that plaid looks more forgiving that normal plaid for matching... it's a great fabric!

  9. Oh, oh, oh that is lovely! I bought this pattern ages ago (before the digital version, hello $35!) and have been waiting for the right time to sew it. The cost of all the bits and pieces though make this a bit of an expensive, indulgent sew for me. But yesterday I found 2m of gorgeous black wool coating fabric (heavy weight) at a Vinnie's store for $5!!!!! What???!!! So now the idea of buying wool binding at about $10 isn't so scary. Yours is just gorgeous, beautiful job :)

  16. That's such an interesting fabric, and I love how the plaid falls on the bias for the sleeves. Your lining-up looks good - that part scares me about plaids and stripes, too. Great job!

  18. Your cape looks so professional. I love the colours. I wish I had been braver and attempted plaid, I made mine in a dark red. Still pondering whether that was a good idea :) You have done a really good job with the binding. Well done.
